SJB Academy was founded in 2017. The Academy is the fruition of a long standing and extremely successful footballl partnership between St. Joseph’s Boys AFC and Bray Wanderers FC. (SJB Academy full form: St. Joseph’s / Bray Academy)
The Academy was officially formed this year, 2017, in preperation for our combined entry into the newly formed SSE Airtricity underage leagues. The SJB Academy will field three teams at U17, U15 and U13 in the newly formed League of Ireland underage structure.
The combined representation of a successful schoolboy club and a successful League of Ireland club firmly cements a relationship that has existed between these two stalwarts of Irish soccer for over fifteen years. The blueprint for his particular relationship has been officially recognised by the FAI at the recent National League Executive Committee (NLEC) meeting, as the preferred development structure for schoolboy and senior football going forward.
Th SJB Academy structure is unique and will further enhance the already well-established coaching set up and player pathway programme that has existed at St. Josephs Boys since its foundation. SJB Academy gives a separate, clear identity for the players and management to work with, yet retains the values, traditions and ethos of both clubs.
St. Joseph’s Boys AFC has been one of the most progressive and successful schoolboy clubs in Ireland and indeed Europe since its foundation in1957. As well as being a local club in the Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown Borough, serving the local community, it has also produced ‘Elite’ teams and ‘development’ squads that have consistently played at the highest level in schoolboy football in Ireland.
Many ‘Joeys boys’ have represented their club at county and country level over the years, producing a steady line of International representation at all age levels. Glancing through the squad sheets of various professional clubs in the English leagues and indeed our own SSE Airtricity league, you will find a substantial number of former Joes’ players playing and flourishing at every level of the game.
Bray Wanderers FC history dates back to 1922. Formed amid excitement, disputes and some opposition from other interests, the club emerged triumphant and has prospered ever since. During the intervening years, through all its trials and tribulations, Bray Wanderers has maintained an influential presence in Irish soccer and has been the sole representative in the League of Ireland from the county of Wicklow. This great club has tasted much success over the years and is one of the longest serving clubs in the League of Ireland.
As the club approaches its Centenary in 2022, it can look back on its achievements, its determination to survive at the highest level and its days of glory and sometimes sadness at the Carlisle grounds, with immense pride. The ‘Seagulls’ and ‘Joeys’, together as the SJB Academy in the SSE Airtricity League, can look forward to a future of football excellence at underage level.
